SCOOP’s Joint Emergency Fundraiser - Supporting the earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey, and the Yazidi people living in the Bajed Kandala Camp, Iraqi Kurdistan.
Following recent catastrophic events, SCOOP has launched a joint fundraiser to assist those in Syria, Turkey and Kurdistan - the funds raised will be split three ways.
Raising funds to support humanitarian aid in Syria & Turkey
On February 6th 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks killed thousands of people living in Syria and Turkey. The combined death toll has risen to over 11,000 people and the World Health Organization has suggested that this could rise as high as 20,000 (Source, The Irish Times). At SCOOP, we’re deeply saddened by this news and our hearts go out to everyone affected. Our partners on the ground in Syria, Hevya Sor, and Yardim Konvoyu in Turkey, are working tirelessly to provide urgent aid to those affected by the earthquake. Both NGOs are highly experienced in responding to disasters of this size and two thirds of the funds raised from this campaign will go directly to supporting their efforts.
Raising funds to help rebuild JHK’s community centre in Bajed Kandala Camp
In December 2022, Joint Help For Kurdistan’s community centre was destroyed by a devastating fire caused by electrical fault. The community centre is a lifeline to thousands of Yazidi people who survived ISIS’ genocide in 2014. For eight years the centre has delivered a range of vital services and primary healthcare to 12,000 people, including a doctor’s clinic, pharmacy, lab, women’s centre, sports, and education for young people and adults.
SCOOP has been working with JHK since 2017, and this is when we delivered our very first art programme alongside artist Shane Sutton. This naturally developed into ‘SCOOP Ed’, which saw an expansion of the programmes we deliver in the camp, including art, IT, design, music, basic English and film making. Due to the structural damage to the centre, SCOOP’s daily IT classes will be put on hold until the environment is safe to use again.
Several rooms were destroyed or severely damaged, including a huge amount of broken and burned equipment, such as:
- Doctor’s Room: ultrasound & table, plus other vital equipment
- Lab: laptop, microscope, centrifuge, CBA machine & printer, spectrophotometer, plus other equipment
- Kitchen: refrigerator, water cooler
- Other: oxygen bottles, children’s play and educational materials, stationary, tables & chairs, windows, air conditioning units.
The clinic’s electrical system was also destroyed, therefore the funds will help re-wire and implement a new system. The overall cost of rebuilding and replacing all equipment comes to a near total of €49,000.
