SCOOP Ed
SCOOP Ed provides young Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) living in camps in Iraq and refugees in Direct Provision in Ireland with educational programmes focused around Art, IT, Design, Music, STEM subjects, basic English and Mindfulness.
Acting as the umbrella term which encompasses all of SCOOP’s educational programmes, SCOOP Ed aims to support young people through personal, academic and professional development.
Iraqi Kurdistan
It all began in 2017 with the launch of SCOOP’s first ever educational programme, focusing on the delivery of an art-based curriculum through in situ classes at Bajed Kandala Camp, Iraqi Kurdistan.
Working alongside SCOOP in Bajed Kandala, artist Shane Sutton gave engaging art classes to young people living in the camp. During these classes, Shane conducted a survey amongst the students to find out what they wished to learn and what gaps could be filled to better their education. Voicing an interest in learning IT skills, graphic design, sound design and programming, students also expressed the need to improve their English and other academic subjects.
This led to the creation and development of other educational programmes, and we expanded our curriculum to deliver additional classes in IT, Design and Science.
Partnerships were forged with Dropbox, CoderDojo, NextRoll and Ableton Live, and classes were delivered in situ by Shane in coding and Photoshop to 60 students. A workshop in Google Suite was facilitated online by volunteers in Google HQ, Dublin, and online physics classes were delivered by a teacher in Erbil, 200 km from the camp.
In January 2020, two SCOOP Volunteers Dylan and Sarah spent the month continuing and teaching IT classes. Not only did they manage to reach more young people, they helped to digitize the Joint Help For Kurdistan’s (JHK) clinic administration functions, moving them away from a manual paper based system.
Ireland
Not only is SCOOP Ed active in Iraqi Kurdistan, as of 2020 SCOOP Ed was extended to Direct Provision Centres in Ireland. We are currently operating with young people in Dublin and Galway, delivering a music production course. In addition, this autumn we will also be starting an online course in Mindfulness for those young people living in Direct Provision. When restrictions are further lifted, more SCOOP Ed in situ classes will be rolled out in these centres with the addition of teaching job application and employability skills.
Plans for 2022
Bajed Kandala Camp, Iraqi Kurdistan
In the summer of 2022, SCOOP will return to Bajed Kandala to continue implementing SCOOP Ed through the facilitation of a late summer camp. Volunteers will teach classes in Art, Design, Music, IT, Basic English and Mindfulness. Once the summer camp has finished, we hope to begin online classes, that will be virtually taught by volunteers in Ireland, ensuring students in Bajed Kandala Camp have all the necessary resources required to support their learning.
Direct Provision Centres, Ireland
When restrictions are further lifted, SCOOP Ed in situ classes will be rolled out in these centres with the addition of teaching job application and employability skills.
